Day 22

Interviewing Citibankers

I reached Parel at 0930 hrs. The taxi driver was Mr Ramjit Singh. He asked me why I didn’t go BKC today. I was shocked. How did he know that???
After taking a second look, I realized it was the same driver that took me to Bandra the other day. I was really surprised that he remembered me! I told him that today my work is in Parel. As usual, (like all other taxi drivers), he gave me his number and asked me to give him a call if I wanted a ride back.

Noni deals with CBG like Deepika. In the true Mumbaikar spirit, I was offered coffee. She then explained to me about the different departments in Parel Office. She introduced to several key personnels that I could do my interview with.

It’s time to work. I got hold of every available ones and started “grilling” or in a nicer term interviewing them about their job scopes, aspirations, work culture, etc. Some of them are very nice to me and really helps me in the interview. But others are wary of why I’m interviewing them and decline to do so. Oh well, I understand.

I took a walk around the neighbourhood during lunch. I saw a vegetable sandwich (it was a vegetable sandwich with an Indian flavour) stall just 200m from the office. I was so excited. I ordered them cos it only cost me Rs 10!!! I wanted a take away but I realized that most who ordered the sandwich stood by the stall and waited for the hawker to serve them. So I decided to do the same. Reminded me of the puri experience yesterday. He served the sandwich on a piece of plastic plate and I joined the rest of the Mumbaikars standing at the stall and eat. I paid him and walked back to the office.

Back at the office, I looked for more people to be interviewed. By 3pm, my job was done. Now it’s time to head back to BKC for updates. I took a taxi to IL&FS and meet up with Deepika to discuss about my project and the overall update of my attachment. After the discussion, I started pounding on my laptop to complete it asap!
Learning Journey:
Through the project, I was able to have a clear grasp of the corporate culture in the ELC department of Citigroup. I realised that interviewing the employees was not an easy task. Most of them are cooperative but others are wary of my objectives. Then there are some who are always busy that I have to "snatch" some time from them in order to get my interview. And I also realised that by employing the "selling skills" I learnt yesterday, I was able to sell myself (or rather my purpose) in order to influence them to do the interview. Tough job!
